San Francisco prosecutors have agreed to no longer introduce physical evidence of condoms in criminal prostitution cases, according to a San Francisco Human Rights Commission statement. The office of the city’s public defender has also agreed to eliminate any discussion of condoms as evidence. The agreements were reached after six months of evaluating police arrests; they aim to balance public safety concerns without jeopardizing the health of sex workers. San Francisco joins Washington, DC, in discontinuing the possession of condoms as evidence in prostitution cases.
